CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2022
BOODLES TRAVEL GARDEN

THE CONCEPT

The incredible journey was completed in 1962 by Anthony Wainwright, father to the current chairman of Boodles, who voyaged around the world in just 16 days. The Boodles Travel Garden was a garden to celebrate this outstanding endeavour with planting drawn from all corners of the world to create a global garden which offered a sanctuary to repose and reflect on the journey.

THE SPONSORS

Established in 1798 and possessing a rich heritage with origins in Liverpool, Boodles is a family-run fine jewellery firm with an international reputation.

DESIGN DETAILS

Structural planting is characterised by intriguing form and habit, including Cyathea cooperii, an indigenous Indian species with a stunning bark pattern, the horizontal Cornus controversa of East Asia, and striped bark of Acer davidii originating from China.

The woodland stumpery-style understory follows the gently flowing water path which is defined with a swathe of blue and burnt orange Iris sibirica ‘Caesars Brother’ and Primula bulleyana, creating the illusion of movement and journey. This winding, rippling water feature was created from sand moulds carried out on West Wittering beach, which were then cast in cement by Bamber Wallis.

A series of mounded planting beds partially obscure views to evoke a sense of scale and discovery. Craftsman and woodsman Alex Walshaw created wonderful furniture in the style of a Chinese noodle bench and a door from coppiced ash and riven oak, reflecting the Far Eastern section of the global endeavour.

Planting was carefully grown and nurtured by Kelway Plants.
